how to survive as business owner during COVID 19

The year 2020 is quite challenging and life changing for all of us. A single virus known as COVID-19 could struck and disrupt our equilibrium. It caused a lot of havoc and uncertainty. Businesses were closed, livelihood and jobs were lost, medical sectors in chaos, economy were deteriorating, countries in lock down, and the most painful of all, thousands of lives were lost.

Before this pandemic, I am a business owner, at ease and full of ideas on how to expand my business. I am managing Aiz Clay and Paints, a business that evolved out of my hobbies which are painting and sculpting. I design and handcraft earrings, souvenir items, figurines as well as personalized items. I was planning for bazaars, exhibits as well as consignment to different shops. I’m so optimistic and excited, but then COVID-19 struck , and in the blink of an eye my plans were now uncertain. Here are samples of my handmade items:

It was then; I realized that things are not constant. As business owners, we must always have the capacity to adjust and adapt. The world is indeed a battlefield, and to survive we must properly equip ourselves.

So here are some tips on how to survive as business owner during this pandemic

1. Go online

Put up a website and optimized your social media accounts. Online presence is vital now since transactions are gearing up towards the internet. You can hire a virtual assistant to do these things for you if you don’ t know how. By hiring you can save cost, manage stress, maximize time and focus on more important tasks.

2. Join an online community such as facebook groups, online marketplace and selling sites

There are various selling groups and online communities that you can join to sell your products. The good news is, most of these are even free. You can check out their policies, and choose which best suits you. Also ensure that the area is near you for accessibility or you can arrange shipping for far locations.

3. Barter or exchange items and equipment that you no longer needed

Here in our area we have an online barter community in facebook wherein people can swap items. There is a businesswoman that was able to exchange 6,000 pesos worth of cellphone cases into basic necessities such as food. It’s still ongoing so she can dispose more of her unsold items. If we can’t sell it, why not exchange it into something we need.

4. Study online or learn a new skill

We have lots of free time now due to quarantine. So instead of sulking in the corner and thinking of what was lost, why not study and make yourself busy? There are online courses that are affordable, some are even free. You may not know, but the newly acquired learning or skill can be used to earn more money later.

5. Exercise and be healthy

Good health is the best investment. Exercise regularly, eat healthy foods and find time to relax. The difficult situation right now can take toll on our physical, emotional as well as mental state. We must bear in mind that this pandemic will be over soon, and everything in due time will get back to normal. So for now, the best that we can do is take good care of our health, equip ourselves and be ready to acquire new opportunities later.
